AGO High Council Meeting was held under Chairmanship of the Attorney General
The meeting was held on Sunday with participation of all AGO deputies and directors and discussed on important topics.
One of the important topics discussed in the meeting was independence of AGO. In past few days, a Member of Parliament (MP) has been frequently visiting prosecutors’ offices trying to exert influence and change a case according to his/her own interest. This obvious interference of the MP, which was ignored by the prosecutors, has then got to associate threat and insult the respective prosecutor by the MP.
After hearing the aforementioned incident, AGO High Council recognized this action as illegal and obvious interference.
Mohammad Farid Hamidi, Attorney General of Afghanistan, mentioned that in order to ensure justice, AGO needs independence. He requested from the President, Parliament officials and Members to prevent irresponsible interferences of individuals to cases at AGO. He mentioned that on Wednesdays we are anticipating MPs. Should MPs have any petition or complaint, they can directly share with the Attorney General.
Members of AGO High Council emphasized that MPs and other influential leaders do not have the right to visit prosecutors directly trying to exert influence on a case. They underlined that interference in work process of prosecutors contradicts with the provisions of constitutions and the principle of justice assurance in the country, and therefore is not acceptable.
Additionally, a plan aiming capacity building of AGO personnel in post-graduate and higher level, was also discussed. As a result, the High Council assigned a committee to start working on the plan and assess the possibilities of providing scholarships inside and outside of Afghanistan.
Some other important and related issues were discussed and decisions were made accordingly.
